Why Does truckee

need a new library?

A New Truckee Library &

Emergency Resource Center

for a Stronger, Smarter, Safer Future

Truckee is one of California’s most resilient and forward-thinking communities, a place where neighbors step up, support one another, and invest in the future we want to see. But our community has outgrown its library.

Neighbors, educators, business leaders, and local organizations across the region are uniting behind the effort to build a new regional library—because they know how important it is to invest in the services and spaces that keep our community connected and safe.

Built nearly 50 years ago for a town of just 2,000 people, Truckee’s current library now serves more than 20,000 residents and 15,000 library cardholders in a space that fits only 54 people at capacity. It lacks the space, technology, and emergency readiness that today’s community needs and deserves.

The proposed measure would cost property owners 3¢ per square foot of building area—or less than $5 per month for the typical homeowner. The cost would be shared equitably across full-time residents, second homeowners, and local businesses, and the project would be funded through a combination of local tax revenue and private donations.

Why Does

Truckee Need

A New LIbrary?

  • Our current library was built nearly 50 years ago for a community of 2,000 people. Today, over 20,000 residents and 15,000 library cardholders rely on that same small space, which holds only 54 people at capacity.

Insufficient space, technology and infrastructure limit programs and services that modern libraries provide.

  • The current library’s 54-person limit leaves just one small table with four chairs in the teen section, and the children’s area frequently exceeds capacity during popular programs like story time. The library is a lifeline for families, offering access to the internet, learning support, and a safe place to explore and grow.

  • Truckee does not currently have an ADA-accessible public facility with permanent backup power that can operate during wildfires, power outages, and other emergencies.

The existing library cannot serve this function. Its small size and outdated infrastructure limit its usefulness in times of crisis.
