Why Does truckee
need a new library?
We’ve outgrown our library
Truckee’s 50-year-old library was built for a different era. It’s outdated, undersized and no longer meets the needs of our region.
Opened in 1976, when Truckee’s population was just 2,000, the Truckee library now serves over 20,000 residents. With room for only 54 people, our library is bursting at the seams and unable to meet the needs of our growing, vibrant community.
Insufficient space, technology and infrastructure limit programs and services that modern libraries provide.
Truckee’s Library
was built for
a different era
The children’s area routinely overflows during story time, turning what should be joyful, engaging experiences into overcrowded, uncomfortable ones.
Students and remote workers compete for just a few shared tables, with no quiet rooms, no privacy, and no dedicated space to focus or collaborate.
Popular programs regularly reach standing-room-only conditions, making it difficult to hear, see, or fully participate. When events are underway, the resulting noise and congestion make it nearly impossible for others to read, study, or work in peace.
This isn’t just inconvenient. It’s a barrier to learning, connection, and opportunity.
As Truckee continues to grow, these limitations will only get worse. Our community deserves a modern library that can truly serve everyone, a place that inspires learning, supports working families, and brings people together.
It’s time to build the library our future demands.

built for safety
ready for crisis
The new library will be a reliable, central place where the community can come together, especially when it matters most.
Designed with accessibility and resilience in mind, this modern facility will provide safety, support, and connection during times of crisis, while continuing to enrich daily life through learning, collaboration, and shared experiences.
When other places close their doors, the library will open its doors wide, becoming a trusted gathering place for warmth, permanent backup power, and community connection.

What Will The
New Truckee Library
Offer?
-
The current library’s 54-person limit leaves just one small table with four chairs in the teen section, and the children’s area frequently exceeds capacity during popular programs like story time. The new library will support early childhood reading, teen services, tutoring, after-school and summer programs, and student success year-round.
-
Truckee does not currently have an ADA-accessible public facility with permanent backup power that can operate during wildfires, power outages, and other emergencies. The new library will provide back-up power, communications infrastructure, and full accessibility for people with disabilities to support residents during wildfires, smoky days, power outages, extreme weather, and other emergencies.
-
Today, over 20,000 residents and 15,000 library cardholders rely on a library that was built for 2,000. One that holds only 54 people at capacity. The new library will provide expanded space for job training, technology, community programs, and cultural engagement for all ages and abilities.

A new 20,000 sq. ft. Truckee Regional Library would create indoor and outdoor spaces for events, workshops, and public meetings that foster connection and belonging.
